The Parents Association of St. Senan's NS created the Jackie Dooley Memorial Award in honour of Jackie Dooley, our former librarian/secretary, who passed away last May 2016. Jackie's mission was to instill in all our pupils a love of reading and literature. She sought out library books that were relevant and exciting. She left no stone un turned to ensure that library books were up to date and suitable to all our pupils. Jackie encouraged, engaged and cajoled the children into reading. Her many talents were recognised by everybody in the school community.
The Award was set up to recognise outstanding achievement in Reading. Over the past year the children have been busy. None more so than Izza May Soiliven, who was the overall winner of the Award. Izza May was presented with her reward at a prizegiving assembly which was held in the school hall on Tuesday, June 27th. Leona O' Brien, Jackie's Daughter-In-Law made the presentations. On behalf of the Dooley Family, she thanked the PA and staff for their kindness and generosity in keeping Jackie's memory alive for years to come.
Other recipients of class reading awards were:
Sophie Lawlor Callum Markham Senior Infants
Darragh Downes Corey Reidy 1st Class
Summer Mc Phillips Oran Kelly 2nd Class
Holly Quinn Billy Kelly 3rd Class
Izza May Soliven Ryan Boyd 4th Class
Dylan Collins Ben O Connell 5th Class

A tribute to our Friend and colleague, Jackie
We are all deeply saddened by the death of Jackie Dooley, our secretary / librarian. Jackie worked for twenty years in St. Senan’s N.S. and we are all the richer for her being in our midst.
Jackie was an energetic, creative, intelligent person who never saw an obstacle in her day to day life. She tackled each task with gusto and carried it out to perfection. No matter how many jobs to be done, no matter how many people to deal with, Jackie went about her days work with an innate dignity and respect for all. No job was too big or small for Jackie. She brought her amazing sense of colour and fun to bear when she was painting and upgrading during the Summer months. She was meticulous about school accounts and organising resources. Her greatest love was her library and the children. Jackie would find a book to suit any child and she made it her mission to instil a love of reading in the most reluctant readers. Jackie handmade little prizes every week end to reward the children. She was abreast of the likes and fashions of all the children and every interest was included in her designs. Jackie was young at heart. She identified with and understood children and generations of St. Senan’s NS pupils were inspired by her and developed a love of books in her library. There is an emptiness in our school and your leaving Jackie has left a huge void in our lives. You affected us deeply and we are all the better for having worked with you. We extend our deepest sympathies to your partner Eric, your sons, Jamie and Ed, your daughter Jess and grandchildren, Lauryn, Vivian and Jaxon. |
MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR JACKIE DOOLEY 6TH MAY 2016
LIBRARIAN AND SCHOOL SECRETARY 1999-2016
There was a memorial service held in the school on Friday May the 6th for our late secretary and librarian Jackie Dooley. During the memorial service colleagues both past and present, parents, friends and pupils shared their wonderful memories of Jackie. Jackie was a lady, an artist, an adventurer, a book worm, a photographer, a gardener and most of all a fantastic friend and colleague. Her positive outlook on life will be greatly missed in the corridors of St. Senan's. She has touched the life of so many children that have passed through the doors of St. Senan's school in such an everlasting way having been described as the children's 'Mammy Figure' away from home.
