3rd-6th class- Trip to the library :)
We had a lovely trip to the local library where the children got the chance to look around at the books that are available to them there. We were also invited to take part in the Summer Stars challenge, something that we really would encourage the children to participate in over the summer, as it would be very beneficial to their reading skills. Please see picture of poster for further information.

CHEFS In the Making
What a busy week we've had in Rang a Dó! We've been studying procedures and recipes in class so we decided to put what we have learned into practice. We followed the steps and instructions very carefully. We baked brownies week one followed by mouth watering pizza week two. What a delicious savoury treat! Our favourite part of the lesson was definitely the taste test! Watch out Donal Skehan and Rachel Allen!
AREA
Pupils work in pairs using various objects from around the class to get the area of their table top. We all estimated before measuring the table! https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/area.html
Congratulations Caelan
A perfect day for a nature walk
We took advantage of the fabulous Spring day taking a walk around Paddy Glynn's wildflower garden and up along the banks of the Shannon Estuary. The children observed the signs of Spring in the environment. They noted the daffodils growing in Paddy Glynn's garden, the cherry blossom tree about to open it's buds, the blue sky and the bluebells in bloom along the banks of the estuary.
Tug-of-war!
We were very lucky to have Olivia from the Irish tug of war team with us today to provide us with a demonstration of the rules, techniques and tips on how to compete effectively in a tug of war competition.
Touring Shannon :)
3rd-6th class had great fun orienteering yesterday as part of our PE programme. We completed different tasks such as describing certain items in the Greenstore, collecting different types of leaves and following directions to take us around the different areas in Shannon. Task 9 was our favourite though- "Enjoy 15 minutes exercising in the playground :)"

A Visit from Ger, Maximus and fluffy
Today we had our annual visit from Ger with two four day old Spring lambs. The children were so excited by our visitors. It brought the season of Spring to life in our classrooms. The children put Ger through his paces asking many farming related questions. They found out exactly how time consuming and difficult the life of a farmer is with lots of late nights and early mornings throughout the season of Spring as they help to bring new life into the world with both lambs and calves being born on the farm.
1916 Commemorations in St. Senan's
The sun was high in the sky here in Shannon as we paid tribute to the men, women and children that gave their lives for Ireland. It was a day full of culture and tradition, as we raised the tri-colour on the flag pole we heard a beautiful rendition of Amhrán na bhfiann. The flag was raised by our wisest member of staff ably supported by one of the Junior Infant children. The parents, friends and neighbours of St. Senan's school community were then treated to a concert in which the children shared poems, songs and stories with them relating to the 1916 rising.
Sacrament of Penance
Jesus Washed Away Our Sins...
Congratulations to the boys and girls of Rang a Dó who made their First Confession on Monday 29th February in Mary Immaculate Church.A huge thank you to the choir and Annette for adding to the ceremony. The children were superb and were a credit to themselves and their parents. Fr. Ryan, as usual, was the chief Celebrant. We listened to the story of Zacchaeus and he listened to the confessions. The pupils and teachers would like to thank him for his continuous support and for all his help in preparing the children for this ceremony. Well done to Nicole Donegan and Abi Histon for designing the front cover of the Mass Booklet.
The children will now start the preparation for their First Holy Communion which will be celebrated on May 30th @ 12 noon.

We all enjoy the Accelerated Reader programme and we read daily for pleasure during DEAR time. We look forward to reading lots of books over the next few months and reaching our targets.
Junior and Senior Infants
What a busy, exciting week!
REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
We were inspired by our Green Flag theme Litter and Waste in Rang a Dó.
We completed fact files on native trees and learned how to draw an oak tree using a simple but effective method.
Did you know that a Dandelion is more than just a weed! Well we know all about a 'dent de lion' after studying its's lifecycle. We will no longer see it as a weed but rather an important plant that's used in salads, medicine and to dye things yellow. We recycled implements from our kitchens to print our dandelion artwork. Can you guess what we used?
Finally we created paper sculptures from old ends of paper and cardboard. its amazing all the things you can make from recycled materials. So stop, think and decide before you throw away waste!

On Friday, 22nd of January, 5th and 6th class students- Kateri Jones, Sarah Woodland, Cirar Birchall and Alicia Mulrennan went to a debate in St. Aidan's NS. The debating topic was "Children today are spoilt". Both teams made very good speeches and made great points. The winning team was the 6th class from St. Aidan's, they won by a narrow margin of just 4 points. Both teams were congratulated on their excellent performances and pictures were taken. Next time a debate rolls around St. Senan's will be ready!! :)

our visit from aaron cunningham
Aaon came to visit us as a role model for our SPHE programme 'Friends for Life'. Craig and Siobhán went to greet him and welcome him to our school. We asked him questions one by one. He told us that he trains the 1st Year hurling team in St. Caimins. He also told us he began playing hurling when he was able to walk. His parents and all his family had a strong interest and passion for hurling when he was growing up and this is what inspired him to keep playing and keep training. His favourite team mates are Kevin Mc Cafferty and Podge Collins. He trains 6 or 7 times a week. Before he left we sang 'The Tones are Back Again' for him and wished him good luck in the All Ireland semi final.

Operation Senans!!
In conjunction with RTE's Operation Transformation we have taken on the challenge of trying to get fitter, healthier and more active this January. We are learning about cardiovascular fitness as well as muscular and bone strengthening. Throughout our 6/7 week challenge we will be increasing our exercise levels both at school and at home. This week we have been concentrating on our cardio fitness- this means improving your heart's ability to carry oxygen around your body while you are exercising or being active. Here are some videos and pictures of our weekly exercise sessions both at home and at school. WARNING: You may want to turn down the volume- we get very excited during PE :)
Thank you to all the parents who have sent in photos of the children in 5th and 6th class keeping up our exercise regime at home in the evenings and outside of school hours. It's great to see that we are all exercising more for our OT challenge :)

Rang a Dó
We have been busy bees since returning last week. In English we are learning how to write recounts. We told our teacher all about our Christmas holidays, next we sequenced the main events and finally we created an interesting booklet entitled 'My Winter Break'. We even added illustrations to make them look like real books.
As part of SESE this term we are studying China. It is a very interesting country. Did you know that red is considered a very lucky colour in China? We learned all about the Chinese New Year which is generally celebrated in January or February. 2016 is the year of the Monkey. We made Chinese lanterns and dragons to decorate our classroom.
January is Friendship month in our classroom, We all have secret buddies. At the end of the month we will try and guess who our secret buddy was. We created a Friendship Tree outside our classroom with our names forming the branches. Everyday we add leaves to the tree. We write messages on the leaves to show all the kind and friendly acts that take place in the yard and around our school.

In 5th and 6th class we had great fun improving our fitness through dance- the song we chose was a personal favourite of many children in the class and was the 'theme song' of the boys football team when they got to the final in October :) Check out some of Drumgeely's Biebers and Beyonces :P

Christmas JUMPER DAY and Coffee Morning
Our active Parent's Association organised a Christmas Jumper Day and Coffee morning in aid of the Asthma Society. Thanks to all our parents, pupils and the local community for coming along and supporting this worthwhile cause.
We had super fun drawing The Grinch and A Minion Santa last week. We followed a YouTube tutorial and had a great laugh looking at how everyone's turned out so different even though we were following the same tutorial. We had some fat Grinches, skinny ones, ones with big heads and more. Here is a picture of how they turned out.
5th and 6th class art
The children in infants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th class in St. Senan's have been busy making beautiful Christmas Art. Here are a few snaps of their great work.
Make and bake 🍕
Amber O'Halloran,2nd Class, won a fantastic prize for herself and 29 of her schoolmates. On Tuesday the 24th of November we arrived at Supermacs for our 'Make and Bake session. The children were given the opportunity to learn how to make little pizzas of their own in a step by step process. From rolling their dough base out, to making their very own tasty creation with toppings of their choice, all our little chefs look and feel the part by donning their very own aprons. Special thanks to parents and the staff of Supermacs.
