A 4km run took place to set the afternoon off to a good start. This was followed by Wild Encounters. The children got to see many strange and unusual animals during the show. And the ice cream van kept everybody cool after the excitement of the many events. Well done to our Parents Association for their hard work in organising a fun filled day for all. |

St. Senan's N.S. walks for water 2017
On Friday, March 24th all pupils participated in Walk For Water 2017. Walking for Water involves walking six kilometres with six litres of water to highlight the average distance walked in countries with issues of water scarcity by women and children to access clean water. World Water Day is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home. In our world today there are children who travel several kilometres each day to gather water for basic household use.
The boys and girls of St. Senan's NS worked together to carry the six litres throughout the 6Km walk. We were extremely lucky to have such glorious sunshine to appreciate the beauty of the nature around us in the Shannon Loop and further afield. Well Done to all our walkers. Maith Sibh.

Chinese New Year 2017 The Year of the Rooster

Chinese New Year Facts
Chinese New Year is a traditional and very important Chinese holiday. Traditionally Chinese New Year lasted from the last day of the Chinese calendar to the 15th day of the first month. The exact date of Chinese New Year changes each year because it originated in 2600 B.C. At that time people followed the lunar calendar. The Chinese New Year is symbolic of letting go of the past and welcoming new beginnings. It's a popular time for spring cleaning. Each year of the Chinese New Year calendar is named after an animal. This is a 12 year cycle. Once the 12 year cycle is over the animal list begins again. The list in order is: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. As the longest festival in the Chinese calendar, Chinese New Year can last as many as 15 days. The decorations used on doors and windows are red colored paper-cuts (made similar to the way we make snowflakes). The themes of these paper-cuts are of happiness, good fortune, longevity and wealth. Firecrackers are popular during the Chinese New Year. They are thought to scare off evil spirits. Children receive red envelopes full of money instead of wrapped gifts that other nationalities give at Christmas. The amount they receive is usually an even number. Dragon dances and street fairs are very popular. Dancers dress up as lions and dragons and perform for onlookers. On the last day of Chinese New Year, everyone carries beautiful paper lanterns and walks along the streets. This is supposed to light the way for the New Year. This day is called Lantern Day. |
Rang a Dó read all about China and this important festival. We wrote fact files and made Chinese dragon masks and paper lanterns to celebrate. They also sampled some Chinese food and soy sauce...mmm delicious!
WINTER ART
Oisín in Tír na nÓg by Rang a Dó
We worked very hard for two full weeks to create our own version of this famous Irish myth. Firsly we each planned and created our illustrations. We even used mystorybook.com on the Ipads to see how real life illustrators work. Next we typed text to form our narrative and finally we edited our work. Writing a book is tough work!
We hope you enjoy it and we are looking forward to creating more books in the future.

Pattern and SHape Detectives in Second Class Pupils have been studying pattern and two dimensional shapes in Maths.
We can now name and describe lots of 2D shapes. We worked in pairs to create our own patterns and used the work of artist Paul Klee as a stimulus. The children have also been working hard after school to find 2D shapes in their houses and around our locality. Check out these fun websites to help revise shape and pattern. |
OCTOBER
AUTUMN
We are learning about and observing seasonal change in our school yard and our local environment. Autumn is one of the four seasons on Earth and is the transition from Summer into Winter. In America, Autumn is also known as the fall. Autumn is the time when deciduous trees shed their leaves. The leaves change from green to red, orange, yellow or brown before falling. The weather also begins to get colder and many plants stop making food.In Autumn, there is less sunlight because the days are shorter. Many animals begin to prepare for the winter by storing food in their nests and dens.
