MARCH AWARDS
indoor Athletics CompetitionWe had 44 pupils from 3rd to 6th attended an Indoor athletics competition on Wednesday, 20th of March in what was a fantastic day out. This was the first time that our school has participated in this wonderful competition.
Children had spent previous weeks preparing for this outing and it really paid off. They participated in various relays, sprinting, throwing, jumping and obstacle events. Our 3rd/4th class girls and 5th/6th class girls emerged victorious, both coming in first place and taking home the trophies. It was a fantastic team effort by all as points from each event were added up to decide the winners. All children were so encouraging to their teammates on the day and gave it their all and we are extremely proud of them. |
fai primary 5-a-side competitionA fantastic day of matches was had for the 5th and 6th class soccer teams at the FAI Primary 5's soccer competition at Lees Road. The girls 'yellow' team narrowly missed out on reaching the county finals after a very unlucky 1-0 loss to Clonmoney. St. Senan's entered four teams into this competition. Each team played their hearts out on the day and had great fun.

community garda visit
Recently we were very lucky to have our local community Gardaí visit our school, Garda Lorraine and Garda Carmel. They gave a very informative talk about being safe on the internet and had great discussions about cyber bullying with 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class.
The Gardaí also spoke to the children about their own roles in the community and how they are always here to keep us safe. |

Racing to Read
Reading Challenge
On Friday the 27th of October we launched a new whole school Reading Challenge called ‘Racing to Read’. The challenge will run between now and the 22nd of December
Statistics show that …
Reading for 20 minutes a day exposes children to a vast quantity of words (1.8 million in each school year, to be exact !) This is turn raises academic standards across the curriculum in all subjects.
We are simply asking our pupils to try to read every day, even during the holidays and on the weekends.
Teachers will calculate the total number of minutes read by the class using the AR and PM reading systems already in place in school. The total minutes read per class will be tallied. As a school,, we will endeavour to reach a total of 50,000 minutes by December 20th!
There will of course be incentives along the way to keep us on course. We were lucky enough to be gifted a fabulous selection of new books. These were donated through the Books for Birdies initiative run by Children’s Books Ireland and sponsored by KPMG.
We are looking forward to seeing all the pupils reading daily for pleasure. They will have to work as a team to achieve a common goal, whilst improving their literacy levels!
So on your marks, get set, READ!

Accelerated Reader
Pupils are now invited to complete a test on their AR book at home after school hours.
Children from 3rd - 6th Class have been using the programme for the last number of years so are well versed on how to complete a test independently. Teachers are connected to the site so we will receive notification on pupils targets as well as scores achieved. Please note it is important that children complete the test on their own. |
PM DIgital
Children in 1st and 2nd Class are encouraged to log on to the following app at home. The PM eCollection will allow the pupils to practise their reading skills with familiar and new books at their instructional level. The collection has over 450 fiction and non fiction books. There is also an audiobook function. The children can record themselves reading and create their own word bank with new vocabulary. Teachers can listen to recordings made and analyse data collated from the programme.
Below is a link for the collection if you wish to log on using a web browser rather than the app.
