CHOILL BHEAG PROJECT
Children from 5th class participated in an Choill Beag day 3 on Wednesday the 24th of April.
The children were extremely willing and hardworking. They gathered lots of cardboard, dug up woodchip and spent the day mulching the trees they had planted in previous days. This mulching will help preserve the soil, reduce weed growth and improve the fertility and health of the soil.
The children really enjoyed this hands-on, active learning opportunity and represented the school excellently. They demonstrated brilliant collaboration and teamwork skills to get the job completed in just a few hours.

‘Under The Sea’ Theme |
GYMNASTICS |
cooking |
During the month of November, Rang Sinéad explored the theme ‘Under the Sea.’ We learned about the importance of clean water, the lifecycle of fish and how to care for pet fish. We were lucky enough to have Andrea from Rockhall Vets call to our class to speak with us. She taught us how to spot for signs of mites, fleas and ticks in our pets and how to care for canine and feline teeth! After all our hard work, we welcomed our very first class pets - meet Goldie and Locksie!
|
During term 1, Rang Sinéad and friends completed a 4 week block of gymnastics lessons at Ennis Gymnastics Club. We completed these lessons in association with Clare Sports Partnership. Our lessons focussed on emotional regulation through exercise, fundamental movement skills and of course fun!
|
During term 1, Rang Sinéad have been busy putting their life skills into practise, creating an array of delicious recipes, from sweet hazelnut spread to savoury cheese muffins. Our cooking class has become a highlight of our week!

March:
For the month of March we were learning all about the Hair Salon for Aistear. We were busy washing the customers hair, cutting it and drying it. We then used the hair dryer, straightener, rollers and combs to style the customers hair. We even got to do the teachers hair 💇♀️Before the Easter holidays, the Easter Bunny left a note for us to say there was an Easter Egg Hunt in Paddy's Garden! 🐇 We had so much fun looking for all the Easter eggs! February: This month, Junior Infants were learning about St. Brigid and made Saint Brigid's Cloaks for their art lesson after discussing the story of Saint Brigid. They used felt and crepe paper to make colourful designs. We also made Kandinsky inspired heart art for Valentine's Day. We went on a Spring nature walk and 6th class also planted sunflower seeds with us. January: We read the book 'Handa's Surprise' and had a discussion on healthy foods and drinks. We then used different fruit and vegetables to do printing in Art. Check out our cool designs! 🍌🍎🥕🍐 We also were busy in the month of January taking part in DEAR - Drop Everything and Read. Every time we heard the race car sound from Múinteoir Kelly, we dropped everything and read a book. December: We have been very busy for the month of December with our new Aistear theme - Santa's Workshop. The elves have been busy designing, fixing and making toys. They have also put their cutting and wrapping skills to the test!! All the presents are then put into Santa's sack as he prepares for Christmas eve. We cannot wait for Christmas! 🎅We also did our first Christmas performance for our parents! November: We have been very busy in Junior Infants for the month of November. Our Aistear theme this month was The Post Office. We wrote letters and put then into envelopes and made sure to put a stamp on them before posting them. Some people were busy weighing parcels and paying their postage to the cashier. The Postman/Postwoman collected the letters and delivered them. We were so well behaved that the Postman dropped by to say hi to us. Then we wrote the most important letter - our santa letters! We will put them in the post box tomorrow to be delivered to the North Pole so stay tuned to see our photos! We walked down to the post box and posted our Santa letters 🎅. We even saw the postman and his van! October: We have been learning all about Houses and Homes this month for Aistear. We learned about the following houses: bungalow, two storey, caravan, apartment, cottage and farmhouse. We were very busy in the Role Play area cooking food, doing the shopping, writing shopping lists, cleaning the dishes and having a rest in the sitting room. We also made teacher lots of cups of coffee 😁😂 For Maths Week, we made 2d shapes out of playdough, did a Maths Trail with 6th class to find 2d and 3d shapes and then we made Shape Monsters. Well done to all of Junior Infants on completing your first Maths Weeks 👏 September: We started Fine Motor stations in the morning to help prepare us for writing and we also started Aistear. This is our play time with other subjects integrated. Our theme for September is 'School' so we have lots of teachers here in Junior Infants ✏️ For art, we drew and painted different types of lines and painted in between them. |

It was so interesting to hear about the different foods we like to eat at home and very exciting for everyone to have a taste of some native dishes 👅This is how our adventure went 🍽️ -We started in Brazil where we tasted some of Clarisse’s Coxinha and Brigadeiros -From there we moved to Poland where we tried some of Lily’s Ogórki Kiszone and Pierogi -Next stop was Croatia to try some of Gita’s Oblatne -Then we were back to Brazil where we tasted some of Yasmin’s Sabor Chocolate Wafer Rolls and Guava Juice which we also discovered is eaten in Portugal too! - After this we took a quick journey to Ukraine where we tasted some of Vika’s Ukrainian Waffle Cake -Before coming home we stopped in The Philippians to try some of Maria’s Filipino Meringue -And finally we returned back to Ireland to Luke’s tea cake, Katie’s carrots and some bags of Taytos (but we didn’t quite have enough room to fit them in so we’ll have to try again tomorrow!) We all thoroughly enjoyed our food adventure and it was definitely something we’ll remember! Space:
During the month of January, Senior Infants and First Class learned all about space. We learned about all the different planets and their order from the sun, which helped us in making our group galaxy picture 🪐We also learned about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and their trip to the moon and were lucky enough to watch some real footage of the moon landing which was fascinating to all of us! 🧑🚀👩🚀Finally we talked about what type of force might get rockets to the moon in the first place. With the help of some Sixth Class boys and girls and Múinteoir Jayme, we watched the effect that a force such as air pressure could have on an object and it was very exciting 🚀 |

AN CHOILL BHEAG
an choill bheag day 1:An Choill Bheag is a long-term educational programme, an initiative of LEAF Ireland. Choill Bheag is a small, dense, biodiverse native woodland habitat on the school grounds. Choill Bheags are outdoor living classrooms, with space created for seating for classes to spend time learning outside. 5th Class are very lucky to have the opportunity to work with and participate in the initiative An Choill Bheag. Niamh visited the school last week where the children investigated the local landscape, planned and prepared for planting trees in a few weeks. The children discovered more about soils, plants, rocks and trees, got their hands dirty digging and collecting soil samples and looking in detail at various living things using magnifying glasses. Here are two students thoughts on the workshop:
“Recently our class has had the privilege of An Choill Bheag project initiative. I think it is a great way to appreciate our environment. On the first day we started by doing soil testing. After that we identified different types of plants and looked closely at them with hand lenses. I think it is fascinating how detailed things are up close. Our school is very fortunate to have such beautiful surroundings and loads of room to plant trees. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity,” by Bridget. “We are very privileged to be part of An Choill Bheag. I think it is a great way to help the environment. It is great to know how much people care about nature and our surroundings. We are delighted to be the class chosen for the project. On day 1 we were soil testing. First, we dug up a square of soil and got a jar. Next, we got the dirt, rolled it up and crumbled it up. Then, we put it into the jar and added water. After that, we had to wait for it to settle. It was very cool. Overall, I really enjoyed going out and learning about all these different plants,” by Kayla. |
an choill bheag day 2:"on day 2, a mucky and rainy day, 5th class were busy getting their hands dirty. The main subject was the hard work - planting the trees.

We celebrated Grandparents Day last Friday as part of Catholic Schools Week. We really enjoyed making cards for all the grandparents to show our appreciation for everything they do. |
🌻Planting Sunflowers🌻
Recently we learned about the different parts of a plant and the process of photosynthesis. Today we helped our friends in Junior Infants plant sunflower seeds. Afterwards we spent some time reading some of their favourite books with them. |
SCHOOL INITIATIVES
Say yes to languages initiative from 3rd to 6thWe are delighted to have Olga (Hanna’s Mom) joining us to teach the children from 3rd to 6th some Ukrainian and Russian as part of the Department of Education Say Yes to Languages programme. The children learned about the different symbols and alphabets in both Ukrainian and Russian and how different they are to English and Irish. It gives the children an excellent opportunity to learn about other cultures and languages, and to converse with some of the new children in our school. The teachers are also picking up some useful words and phrases!

pilates with eimerSchools play a vital role in the promotion of wellbeing through a range of activities and approaches to support the academic, physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual development of all children and young people. St. Senan's was very lucky to secure some funding from CLDL to provide an instructor, Eimer, to teach pilates and movement/stretching classes to the children. These sessions allow the children timeout from the busy classrooms and space to check in with themselves and their bodies. From the feedback below, we can see the positive impact the classes are having on the children:
